Council Cup Scenic Overlook



Location: Wapwallopen, PA overlooking Susquehanna River and PP&L Steam Electric (Nuclear) Generating Station

Along with the Susquehanna Riverlands/Wetlands Nature Area, Council Cup has been designated an Important Bird Area. It is also the site of an annual hawk count during the autumn migration.


Event/Season: Fall Raptor Migration; Spring Songbird Migration; Songbird Breeding Season


Possible Sightings: From the Lookout: broad-winged hawk, red-tailed hawk, sharp-shinned hawk, osprey, bald eagle; From the trails: pine warbler, American redstart, chestnut-sided warbler, eastern kingbird, ovenbird, scarlet tanager, blackburnian warbler, prairie warbler, red-eyed vireo, eastern wood pewee


Directions: I-81 to PA 93 West (I think it's west -- just turn left toward Conyngham from exit ramp), to PA 239. Turn right onto PA 239. Follow Rt. 239, which at times is winding with strange turns. At bottom of winding hill bear right at stop sign. Rt. 239 begins to follow along the Susquehanna River. Turn right at abandoned gas station and look for signs to the Overlook.
