Annual Banquet

at

The Apple Tree Terrace

4 Newberry Estate, Dallas, PA

Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

“Camouflage and Mimicry”

Nature has provided many species with ways to protect themselves against predators. Camouflage is one of them providing features and colorations that obscure or hide a species’ appearance in its natural surroundings. The American Bittern is a good example of this. Mimicry is another allowing one species to closely resemble another so that it benefits from the mistaken identity. The harmless Viceroy butterfly looks very much like the Monarch which makes birds sick when eaten.

Rick Koval, Head Naturalist at Skytop Lodge, staff naturalist for WNEP TV’s Pennsylvania Outdoor Life, and writer of the weekly Sunday Out & About articles for the Pocono Record, has taken many photos demonstrating these protective defenses that he will present to us and challenge us to see what he sees.

Come join GWVAS and Rick Koval for an evening that should certainly be as enlightening and entertaining as it is educational.

Directions to Appletree Terrace at Newberry Estates in Dallas

From Wilkes-Barre and Points South

Follow Route 309 North for 7 miles (from Route 81, figure accordingly).

At 3rd light, turn left onto Pioneer Avenue.

Go 1.9 miles (through 4 STOP signs).

At 0.4 miles farther, make a left turn into "Newberry Estates."

Stay on entrance road and follow the signs to Appletree Terrace.  This will be a left hand turn.

Parking is available just past Appletree Terrace building on the left, or just before the building, turn to the right and drive behind the building.

From Tunkhannock and Points North

Due to ongoing construction in Dallas, please use these updated directions to Appletree Terrace from Points North.

Follow Route 309 South past the Frontier offices on the right. At the traffic light by Dallas High School, turn RIGHT onto Center Hill Road. (This is not the second light on 309 which you will see.)

At the first STOP sign (4-way), continue straight, to Lake Street, another 4-way, and then straight to Route 415.  You will pass Leggio's Restaurant on your left.

Turn left at that traffic light.  At the light at Main Street, turn right.  (PennDot is doing work there, so we are not sure how many traffic lights you will pass.)

After the second STOP sign, the Appletree drive will occur soon on your right.

Parking is available on the left side of the road just past Appletree Terrace. Some parking also is available behind Appletree Terrace.
